The WIne

The 2023 MMAD Vineyard Rosé has a lovely pale salmon hue. Fresh blood orange notes on the nose are followed by a mix of bright red fruit and a savoury profile, with floral, fennel frond, anise seed and quince notes on the palate. A delicious dry and complex rosé with a touch of grip on the finish. All four grape varieties on the vineyard (Grenache, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chenin Blanc) were handpicked for this ‘field blend’ rosé.

The Vineyard

Located in the dress circle of Blewitt Springs, MMAD Vineyard has Grenache that was first planted in 1939, as well as Shiraz and Chenin Blanc, the oldest of which were planted in 1941 and 1964 respectively and a small block of Cabernet Sauvignon on the high plateau. The vineyard has the fine Maslin sands found in Blewitt Springs, and is exposed to the fresh sea breezes from the southwest. Below the sand is a layer of ironstone pebbles, and this combination of sand, ironstone, and cooling

The Story

The old vines of Blewitt Springs are a precious resource, and an important part of Australia’s viticultural history. In early 2021, MMAD Vineyard was purchased by a quartet made up of winemakers Martin Shaw and Adam Wadewitz, and Masters of Wine Michael Hill Smith and David LeMire. MMAD takes its name from their first initials. The MMAD wines aim to reflect the unique terroir of Blewitt Springs and the rare old vines that thrive there.

This is an exquisite medium-bodied rosé, boasting startling attention to detail, attesting to craftsmanship of the highest order. Kumquats, crushed musk and sea spray. Particularly exciting is the confluence of Blewitt Springs’ maritime influence and the phenolic detail, directing the palate to impressive, thirst-slaking length. A dry, serious and beautifully crafted expression, made from old-vine grenache, shiraz and cabernet, with a jolt provided by a dollop of chenin blanc. This makes me swoon. 93 points

A field blend of grenache, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and chenin blanc in undisclosed proportions, this blushes a few shades above the increasingly anaemically hued Provençal model. Nor is it subscribing to that flavour and texture script, with forest berries bordered by a hedge of herbal cabernet notes and hints of spice. There’s a textural viscosity and sweet-fruited palate play burred with a little grip, putting this in the food rather than fun-in-the-sun category. 93 points
